SKILLED
Photos by Tod Bryant
April 25 - July 19
These portraits - images of Skilled historic preservation craftspeople - are a tribute to their dedication and the passion that they bring to their work.
It is a way to present the people who have dedicated their lives to a mastering specific craft or trade – a Skill – that few possess, in a dignified and personal way. These women and men usually labor in the shadows of better-known professions, but without these Skilled people nothing happens. They are the heart and soul of historic preservation. Nobody gets rich doing what they do. They do it because they are born to the task. Some of them are descended from families who have been plying their trades for generations, but many have felt an individual calling to do what they do. We hope this exhibit will inspire a new generation of tradespeople to join them.

SEANIE VAUGHAN
Thursday, June 11 - 7:30 PM
Seanie Vaughan, the indie rock and folk artist hailing from Connemara, Galway, has been quietly shaping the Irish music landscape for over a decade. His music blends heartfelt songwriting with textured folk-rock instrumentation, reflecting not only the rugged beauty of the west of Ireland but also the turbulence, tenderness, and resilience of modern life.
A Class Act in Irish Music
Between Chaos and Order is more than just a comeback, it’s the sound of an artist at his most grounded and assured. From the youthful introspection of Altered Vision to the darker explorations of Redemption, and now the textured maturity of his third album, Seanie Vaughan has carved a path defined by sincerity, resilience, and a deep connection to both his roots and his audience. Soulful, textured, and sincere, his latest work cements him not only as a voice of Connemara but as an integral figure in Irish rock and folk today.

DEATH and the FOOL: A Medieval Folly
Saturday, June 20 - 2 PM
A family-friendly Happenstance Theater production!
(Recommended for ages 7+)
A Tarot-inspired mystery play full of slapstick comedy, music from the Middle Ages, puppetry, and whimsy to drive away fear and offer relief from impending doom, just as folly brought light to the Dark Ages. As the Fool faces Death and seeks guidance, you too can consult the Oracle, be comforted by the High Priestess, trust in the Doctor if you dare, and give your troubles to the Crone.
“Transcendent and provocative…Happenstance provides immeasurable entertainment with its comedy, music, and artistry…A characteristically compelling, intelligent, and thought-provoking hour of unique, outstanding, must-see theater.” – DC Theater Arts
DEATH and the THE FOOL was originally adapted from Happenstance Theater’s ADRIFT | A Medieval Wayward Folly for the Maryland Renaissance Festival and then expanded to become this charming new touring show.
HAPPENSTANCE THEATER, founded in 2006, is a professional company committed to devising, producing, and touring original, performer-created visual, poetic Theatre. Our ensemble has been developing work together since 2012. We are eclectically skilled artists who craft all aspects of our pieces from concept to realization. Under the Artistic co-Direction of Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell, we harvest imagery from the past and re-contextualize it in performances that address the universal themes of mortality and the ephemeral. With the simplest means – humor, whimsy, music, silence, text, physical comedy, object manipulation, vulnerability, and generosity – we seek to elevate the moment when the performers and audience meet, to lift the encounter beyond the daily and pedestrian into the realms of dreams, poetry, and art. Meaning is often found by happenstance.
In 2016, Happenstance received three Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Costume Design, and Outstanding Lead Actor. In 2017, Happenstance received two Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Musical Direction.
